Astronaut Reveals Mental Health Struggle After ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a public message, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.
She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on female health science and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her lab work and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.
She is best known for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the supporters whose support pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She noted that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the experience, including increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
The diverse crew also comprised accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
The enterprise behind the mission is a private space firm established by a well-known tech mogul.
