No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the national leader.

The official reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in national infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated pace, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and management of these national projects.
