New research reveals that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying such medications must be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
Users who have stopped the medication report a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
